Joy and Laughter – a way to disarm and to fight. Bulgarian satirical press from the Ottoman time
The class will discuss the expression of joy and its nuances. Taking a literary and anthropological approach it will discuss the history of laugh and satire according to Mikhail Bakhtin’s vision of the types of “Renaissance laughter” and “Enlightenment laughter”. It will base its case studies on the genres of feuiletton and caricature in writing and painting in Bulgarian printed culture from the 19th c.
